If you (quite rightly) think the default layouts offered by Dreamwidth stink, and like the one I'm currently using on my own journal ([personal profile] daveio), here it is.

ditto (by [community profile] shinemagic)

It applies to your Friends page and your journal itself. It seems inoffensive as presented, and simple enough to extend and improve over time.

[edit: I tweaked the CSS to suit modern environments, clicky for details]

Consider editing your mood icon choices. Especially if you used the smaller pixel icons which I did, which were great when the average desktop resolution was 1024x768 but are now completely unreadable.

Dreamwidth has a decent selection of alternatives which render at a size that can be read comfortably on modern displays. You can also choose to force a particular mood icon set on your Friends page, which is something worth considering to fix others who still use unreadable icons.

I've been tweaking the layout I previously mentioned. If you want larger fonts and a wider content area, use the css from dave.io/dreamwidth/ditto.css instead of the original theme's.

Follow all the other instructions as normal; just replace the CSS.

Importantly, though, copy and paste the CSS. Apart from the fact that you can only load one remote stylesheet and you need it for the font, for some reason the Dreamwidth CSS proxy 403s when it tries to talk to my remote. I have no idea why.
